Remember when I went in Sephora and they asked me if I needed help 8 times to try to get me to leave the store and I forgot to record it so that I could build evidence for my discrimination lawsuit
Anyway I’m recording today bitch I better have a pleasant experience
They do this at Urban Outfitters (I worked their for 3 years or so in NC and NYC). They called it “enhanced customer service,” which was a tactic used to deter shoplifting aka harass random black shoppers. This was only ever used on white shoppers if someone SAW them try to conceal merchandise, but was used on black shoppers from the time they walk in the door. I worked mostly in inventory and merchandising so I wasn’t aware of how deep it was until I was waiting to be checked out one day(we had to have our bags/pockets etc checked when we exited the store). Two black dudes (who I read as college students) walked in and the associate at the door immediately paged over the walkie “Nick to men’s, Nick to men’s.” Nick was the term used for suspected shoplifters to be covert over the intercom. Like… these dudes did nothing but walk in to the store, and didn’t even fit a stereotypical profile (not that that would have made it any better). They were seen as threatening just for being black. This was at the UWS location that has now closed.
I remember one time in the Charlotte, NC location this white girl got caught stealing about $250 worth of merchandise (which in NC puts you in the felony larceny range). Was she arrested? Nope. They called her parents, and they apologized and swore up and down that she was a good kid. But if a black person so much as got caught stealing a pair of sunglasses, please believe they were taking a ride in a police car.
Happens all the time to me at urban outfitters here in Chicago and that’s the reason why I don’t shop there anymore.
